R.C. Bruce was a remarkable figure — a Scottish-born sailor who went to sea at age 14, spent decades on merchant ships and gold fields across New Zealand, Australia, America and beyond, before entering politics as Member of the House of Representatives for Rangitikei (1884–1893). His memoir is a vivid account of 19th-century seafaring life and early New Zealand colonial experience, including encounters on the Otago goldfields, the Barbary Coast, and the New Zealand bush. A genuine piece of New Zealand colonial history, and extremely rare in the secondhand market.
