What I Believe by E. M. Forster

A scarce first edition and first separate printing of E. M. Forster’s influential humanist essay What I Believe, issued by the Hogarth Press in 1939 as Hogarth Sixpenny Pamphlets Number One.

Originally published in periodical form in 1938, the essay sets out Forster’s defence of tolerance, personal relationships, individual liberty and democracy in the shadow of approaching war. This edition is notable both as an important piece of twentieth-century political and literary thought and as an early Hogarth Press pamphlet associated with Leonard and Virginia Woolf’s celebrated publishing house.
