About this book
Anzia Yezierska's stories follow Jewish immigrants negotiating poverty, work, education and belonging in New York. Their hopes for a new life meet the pressures of crowded city streets and unequal opportunities. This Virago Modern Classics edition includes an introduction by Riva Krut and an afterword by Louise Levitas Henriksen, bringing renewed attention to a distinctive voice in American immigrant literature.
