New Zealand Images of War by Tony Martin

Secondhand paperback good condition. Published by the Dunmore Press Ltd, 1990. A collection of war images from New Zealand's perspective. The artwork captures the essence of war through various artistic interpretations.

Why may not the real horrors of battle be illustrated? Every time I have painted the reality I have been requested to alter it." So wrote Captain Pearce, official First World War artist in January 1919. How is the reality of the whole army of soldiers churned into the mud at Passchendaele reconciled with an austere image of a field of crosses strewn over a blasted landscape? How does an artist render in paint the experience of terror when his own nation's military forces recklessly confront a peace flotilla? What do the rapidly moving images of electronic death mean to a young video player?
