Captured by Germans and surviving the firebombing of Dresden as a POW, Billy is also abducted by aliens from Tralfamadore who teach him that all moments exist simultaneously, rendering free will illusory. The narrative weaves Billy's trauma, absurdities of war, and encounters with aliens, punctuated by the refrain 'So it goes' after every mention of death.
