Format: Complete 8 volume set. Full leather bindings with gilt spine titles. Octavo.
This is a complete early 19th-century leather-bound edition of David Hume’s monumental History of England, edited and revised by Rev. George Berkeley Mitchell for family and Christian readership. Hume’s work remains one of the most influential historical narratives ever written in the English language, shaping interpretations of British constitutional development, monarchy, civil war, and the Glorious Revolution.
The Mitchell revision reflects the moral and theological sensibilities of early 1800s Britain, making this edition historically significant not just for its content but for its editorial framing. It provides insight into how Enlightenment historiography was adapted for Victorian-era religious audiences.
Condition: Used antique set (1816). All eight volumes present. Original leather boards heavily worn with rubbing, scuffing and age-related surface cracking. Gilt spine titling remains partially visible. Page edges toned with scattered foxing typical of early 19th-century paper. Bindings appear intact and structurally sound for age. A genuine early 1800s set in solid, readable condition.
Collector appeal: Ideal for collectors of antique English history, leather-bound libraries, Georgian publishing, theology-influenced historiography, and decorative heritage shelving. Increasingly scarce as complete sets in original leather.
Antique used set. One complete set available.
