Great Souls at Prayer by Mrs Mary W. Tileston.
A beautifully produced early 20th century devotional pocket book collecting fourteen centuries of prayers, praise, meditation, and spiritual reflections from many of Christianity’s most influential writers and thinkers.
This compact edition gathers prayers and aspirations from major historical figures including St Augustine, Thomas à Kempis, Christina Rossetti, Robert Louis Stevenson, Erasmus, Jeremy Taylor, and many others. The collection spans ancient Christian liturgy through to Victorian devotional writing.
Interesting note: The bibliographical page records the first edition as published in September 1898, with this being a later printing from the 1920s era. The title page states this is the Thirty-Third Edition, reflecting the book’s enduring popularity as a daily devotional companion.
Its small leather-bound format was designed for everyday carrying and private reflection, making it both a spiritual and historical artifact of personal religious practice from the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.
Condition: Fair to good vintage condition. Attractive black leather binding with gilt lettering. Internal hinges show wear and loss to front pastedown area. Pages generally clean with age toning and light foxing. Binding remains intact and text block solid.
